Apply for the 2021 Crestmoor Scholarship The application for the 2021 Crestmoor Neighborhood Memorial Scholarship is now available online. The application deadline is Tuesday, March 2, 2021, at 5:00 p.m. With generous donations from the Joseph W Welch Jr Foundation and the San Mateo County Association of REALTORS® Foundation, SBCF plans to award multi-year college scholarships totaling $190,000 this spring.
High school seniors headed to community college or a four-year institution as well as community college students planning to transfer to a four-year college in the fall of 2021 are eligible to apply. Applicants must live or attend a high school or community college located in San Bruno. Scholarship recipients must demonstrate, as the top criterion, deep engagement and involvement in the San Bruno community. Other factors that will be considered during the selection process include, in no particular order, an applicant's financial need, extracurricular activities, academic record, and examples of leadership, teamwork, and collaboration. The Crestmoor Scholarship honors the community members who most directly endured the destruction of the 2010 gas pipeline explosion and resulting fire and especially in memory of the eight San Bruno residents who lost their lives in the disaster. January Board Meeting Summary The Board of Directors of the San Bruno Community Foundation held its regular monthly meeting on January 6, 2021, via Zoom. President Emily Roberts opened the meeting by acknowledging the day's troubling events and denouncing the violence and chaos at the U.S. Capitol (see statement below). She also sounded a hopeful note for 2021, with COVID-19 vaccines being distributed, and thanked the community for sacrifices made and traditions paused over the holidays. The primary item of business at the meeting was a study session to kick off the Foundation's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) work. Dr. Rona Halualani of Halualani & Associates introduced the Foundation Board and staff to DEI concepts. She defined the term, "social location," as the power positionality and placement of an individual in a society in terms of key demographics, such as gender, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic class, sexual orientation, nationality, regional origin, and language, among others. Other key terms she reviewed included: - Diversity: How difference, culture, and varied identity backgrounds, and identity experiences are framed, engaged, and valued as a whole
- Equity: How structured inequalities, systemic oppressions, and power differences among cultural groups, identity backgrounds, and identity experiences, are confronted and engaged
- Inclusion: How an organization addresses societal, historical, & internal structural barriers to the full participation, contribution, & success of campus members across varied identity backgrounds and experiences
The Board's second DEI study session will take place at the February 3 regular Board meeting and explore the question, "What does it mean to commit to diversity, equity, and inclusion as a community foundation?" |

President's Statement on the January 6, 2021, Insurrection at the U.S. Capitol "As we gather here tonight, I cannot begin to express my shock and horror at today’s events at the U.S. Capitol. The unlawful insurrection at the Capitol will, no doubt, go down as a disgraceful episode in American history. I denounce the violence and chaos we witnessed today at one of the most sacred “citadels of democracy,” to quote our President-Elect. Today’s actions of extremists do not reflect the democratic principles on which our nation is based. I am relieved that the Capitol building has been secured, and that Congress is proceeding with its constitutional duty to certify the electoral college results this evening. May our senators and members of Congress do so safely and with the understanding that the peaceful transfer of power is a cornerstone of our democracy." - Emily Roberts, SBCF President January 6, 2021 |
